Types of Surveys

A brief introduction to surveys and their layout. Surveys consist of main three types, single page surveys, multi page surveys and logical surveys as well as quickpolls.

The diagram below shows the relationship between pages, groups, questions and options in DWsurvey. Some surveys can span across multiple pages. On a page questions can be brought together into groups and for a multiple choice question, the possible answers are called options.

Single Page Surveys

These surveys are displayed all on one screen with a submit button (at the bottom in the default template).

The questions on these surveys can be grouped together and the questions themselves can have options (for example in multiple choice questions you can have a number of possible responses that you define, these are called options).

Multi Page Surveys

These surveys work almost in an identical way to single page surveys except they can span across multiple pages and have a progress bar showing the particpant how far through the survey process they are.

The questions on these surveys are assigned a page, the questions on a page can also be grouped together and the questions themselves can have options (for example in multiple choice questions you can have a number of possible responses that you define, these are called options).

Logical Surveys

These surveys always start with a single question. Based on the answer to this question to user is then redirected to another question and then another and so on. For example if you have a multiple choice question with two possible answers, if the user selects option 1 they might go to question 2 and if they select option 2 they might go to question 3. Questions 2 and 3 might then go to the end of the survey, but they might work in just the same way as question 1 did.

Pages and groups are not used in logical surveys as each question is on it's own page. The questions themselves can have options (for example in multiple choice questions you can have a number of possible responses that you define, these are called options).

Embedded Surveys

These surveys can be created from any type of existing survey on the system. They are generated through the Link Generator. You can display your surveys embedded on any page on your website using a small bit of code that the Link Generator gives you.

Quickpolls

There is a fourth type of survey which we haven't yet mentioned as they don't follow all of the principles that the other types do. These are polls. A poll is a single multiple choice question that allows you to display instant results.

Quickpolls are essentially single page surveys, they are just limited to one question and only certain question types (multiple choice, single answer and multiple choice, multiple answer).
